Mike Stewart/Associated PressI’ll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, winning the 137th Preakness Stakes on Saturday.For the second straight race, the Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another ran down the pace-setter Bodemeister in deep stretch, winning the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
I’ll Have Another, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, won by a neck after winning the Derby by one and a half lengths. He covered the mile and three-sixteenths in 1 minute 55.94 seconds and paid $8.40 on a $2 bet to win. Creative Cause finished third.
Asked after the race what he was thinking, the trainer Doug O’Neill said: “He’s a special horse. We’ll see how he comes out of it. If he comes out of it O.K., it’s on to New York, baby. We’re thinking Triple Crown, baby!”
I’ll Have Another now has a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. Bodemeister will not race in the Belmont Stakes, set for June 9 at Belmont Park.
