Romanian parliament votes to suspend President Basescu



The Romanian parliament has voted to suspend the country's president, government officials have said.

Traian Basescu has been suspended for 30 days. During the period there will be a nationwide vote on whether or not he should be removed from office.

The decision was taken with 258 votes for the suspension, versus 217 needed for a majority.

Mr Basescu has clashed with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who heads the opposing Social Liberal Union.
