The Romanian parliament has voted to suspend the country's president, government officials have said.
Traian Basescu has been suspended for 30 days. During the period there will be a nationwide vote on whether or not he should be removed from office.
The decision was taken with 258 votes for the suspension, versus 217 needed for a majority.
Mr Basescu has clashed with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who heads the opposing Social Liberal Union.
