Shooting at travellers' site in Peterborough injures men

Travellers' site, Oxney Road, Peterborough

Armed police were called to Oxney Road in the city shortly after 10:00 BST. The men were then taken to hospital.

Det Insp Dave Grierson, from Cambridgeshire Police, said: "We believe those responsible for this shooting may have used a vehicle to travel to and from the site."

An air ambulance transported one casualty to hospital. Two of the men are said to be in critical condition.

The third man is said to be stable.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: "We dispatched... our hazardous area response team, a senior officer, a clinical officer, rapid response car and two ambulances to the scene.

"Three men were treated at the scene for ballistic type injuries, two of which are deemed serious."

Det Insp Grierson added: "I would urge anyone who saw any suspicious activity in Oxney Road, close to the site, to contact police.

"At this stage we are treating this as an isolated incident and inquiries are continuing to trace those responsible."

Armed police and investigating officers remain at the scene.
