  • Six militants are killed, air force spokesman says

(CNN) -- A two-hour gunbattle at an air base in northern Pakistan left six militants and two military members dead, a spokesman for the nation's air force said.

Militants dressed as airmen killed two guards when they shot their way through a security post Wednesday. The incident occurred when the personnel were eating a predawn meal in observance of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, Capt. Tariq Mehmood said.

Initial reports indicated there were eight to 10 militants involved in the attack on the base in Kamra, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of the capital of Islamabad. But Mehmood said it's unclear whether some escaped or the number was incorrect.

Security personnel continued to look for the attackers after the gunfight and found one of the dead gunmen was wearing a suicide vest.

Four airmen were wounded in the attack. There was no damage to aircraft, Mehmood said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
