The search for a woman believed to have fallen overboard from a ferry en route from Guernsey to Poole in Dorset has been called off.
The crew of the the Condor Rapide Fast Ferry raised the alarm at 17:35 BST and a full search was made of the vessel.
RNLI lifeboats, a fixed wing aircraft and French search and rescue teams searched for the woman while the ferry also changed its journey to assist.
However Portland Coastguard suspended the search at 22:00.
The RNLI had stood down its Weymouth and Alderney lifeboats by 21:00
Nigel Robson, Portland Coastguard Watch manager, said: "We have searched the route of the ship and the areas where our search planning expertise indicate a person might have been carried by the tide.
"Sadly, we have found no-one.
"It's now been five hours since the person was reported missing and because of the water temperature and difficulty of searching in the dark, we have now called off the search."
The service involved had begun its journey at Jersey and had departed from Guernsey at 16.15. It was due to arrive in Poole at 19:15.
Vessels in the area had also been asked to keep a lookout for the missing passenger.
